Houses Built
The Council responded to consultation on the County Structure Plan by arguing that the house building target for the Borough should increase from 6,000 to 9,000 in the period 1986–2001. The Secretary of State agreed to it being increased to 8,000. The Council then made representations to the County Council on the next Structure Plan running to 2011 to increase house-building numbers from 6,700 to 7,600. This was agreed following the Borough Council’s representations. The result has been housing-led population growth with the Borough population increasing from 98,600 at the 1981 Census to the current figure of 111,006. The housing stock has been transformed with around 500 new units constructed each year. This has provided residents with access to dwellings constructed to the highest current standards of energy efficiency and with the full range of modern facilities.
