Comparison of Regional and National Unemployment Rate
Notes:
- Comparisons of unemployment over time can be dubious due to changes
in the benefit system and boundary changes.
- Travel-to-Work Area residence based unemployment rates will not
be available until mid 2003.
- From December 2002, ONS has withdrawn its work force based claimant
count unemployment rates and replaced them with residence based unemployment
rates. These show claimant count figures as a proportion of the resident
working age population. In most areas, the effect of this has been
to reduce the unemployment rate even when claimant counts have remained
the same. Therefore, comparisons of unemployment rates cannot be made
with figures prior December 2002.

- All areas follow a similar pattern; local unemployment rates
are heavily influenced by regional and national trends.
- Unemployment in the Crewe Travel-to-Work Area has consistently
been lower than the rates for Great Britain and the North West. (see
note 2 above)
- In November 2002 the Borough’s workforce based unemployment
rate was 2.0%; higher than the Cheshire County average of 1.6%, but
lower than the national average of 3.0%.
- In January 2003 the Borough’s residence based rate of
unemployment was 1.8%. (see note 3 above)
- The rate of unemployment in the Borough has more than halved
over the last five years, falling at a steady rate as illustrated
in the table below:

Notes:
- These figures have not yet been adjusted to reflect the 2001 Census
population data.
- ONS unemployment rates given above are based on the number of unemployed-related
benefits claimants resident in the area expressed as a percentage
of the sum of claimants and workforce jobs in the given area. This
is a workforce-based rate.

Unemployment in Wards of Crewe and Nantwich

Source: Cheshire Facts and Figures, Cheshire County Council
- Grosvenor, Alexandra, Maw Green, St. Barnabas and St. John’s
experience the highest rates of unemployment in the Borough. The unemployment
rates within these wards are higher than the national average of 3.0%.
- Unemployment rates are highest in urban parts of Crewe, whereas
rural areas experience lower unemployment. However, there is an element
of 'hidden' unemployment, particularly in rural areas not captured
in the unemployment rates.
