Businesses in Crewe

The Borough has an expanding and modern business centre built on a traditional and highly skilled workforce, which has adapted and evolved into the new technology age.  This is well reflected in one of the district's largest employers, Bentley Motor Cars, with the Bentley marquee being a much sort after status symbol.

Bombardier Transportation Limited of Crewe has emerged from the traditional train building industry, established in the town with Crewe Railway Works, to offer broader based engineering services in an increasingly competitive market place.

Apart from engineering, the agricultural, food and clothing industries have traditionally been important locally.  Mornflake Oats origins date back to the 17th century and the company operates the largest oat mill in Europe and Cheshire Clothing continues to produce quality suits and clothing from its Crewe factory.

In recent years, a wide range of new companies has been attracted to the area, with a growing high technology, distribution and service sector element.  Gallahers and Glaxo SmithKline's UK distribution centres are based in Crewe, and retailers Focus DIY and Partners headquarters are also in the town.

Investment from high technology companies large and small has increased in recent years, including Osmetech, Aromascan and APT Marconi. Overseas investment has played an important part in the diversification of the local economy, with US companies such as Air Products, and Japanese companies Sokkia and Fujitsu all having offices on Crewe Business Park.

The Borough Council, in partnership with others, has provided and developed sites to house the influx of new businesses.  Crewe Gates Industrial Estate is home to over a hundred companies and is now largely developed.  Marshfield Bank Employment Park provides 23 acres of employment land, but the Borough's flagship site is Crewe Business Park, a 67-acre high tech office development renowned for its innovatory conservation policies.

A range of other sites offer a wide choice for the potential investor, including the stately Crewe Hall Enterprise Park.  Plans are progressing to bring forward major sites to meet the requirements of companies well into the new millennium.  Basford West (130 acres) will provide road/rail terminal opportunities and Basford East (225 acres) has been acknowledged as one of the North West's key strategic sites for inward investment.

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council offers a positive and highly supportive attitude and can help with enquiries for industrial land and buildings.  They are prepared to consider flexible terms for land/unit disposal to assist individual requirements.  The Economic Development and Estates Division can provide information on all Council services and supply contact names for other service providers within the Borough.
